How to Decoupage Like an Experienced Decoupeur

Decoupage is the art of cutting, pasting and arranging paper onto a surface such as a box, a plaque, a glass plate, a table, a vase, etc. Anyone who can use scissors and glue can decoupage. But the expert decoupeur's creativity and experience creates a work of art. From ostrich eggs to glass Christmas ornaments, the experienced decoupeur uses scissors with a sharp point to cut the fine details of each cutout then meticulously arranges each paper cutout and glues them into place on a prepared surface. The next steps of varnishing and sanding, until the edges have disappeared and the surface is like glass, is time consuming. The end product is well worth all the effort; a beautiful piece of art has been created.

For the beginner, the intricate cutting and oftentimes messy gluing can be a deterrent. Or the beginner who doesn't have an artistic eye, a simpler method is to use stickers. Prepare the surface of the medium you are to decoupage. Wait until the surface is completely dry before applying stickers. Arrange your stickers in an appealing pattern on the surface. The last step is to apply several coats of varnish, waiting for each coat to completely dry before applying the next. Stand back and look at your work of art.

Decoupage is an art and as with any art practice makes perfect. All decoupeurs started as beginners just like you but if you are serious about the art then with experience and time your simple designs with stickers will become intricate works of art. Practice cutting the fine details on scrap papers and lightly glue them to a piece of scrap. The gluing step can be tricky as bubbles can form or if you rub too hard the paper can rip. Practice these techniques and soon you will be an experienced decoupeur.

Research the art of Decoupage, read books and discover the decoupeur in you.
